JOB ANNOUNCEMENT for Doctoral Students’ Council’s OpenCUNY

By / June 15, 2017

The deadline for the open position of Coordinator for Organization and Action at OpenCUNY is extended until July 11th

The DSC seeks candidates for the following open position at OpenCUNY:

  • Coordinator for Organizing and Action

In 2008, the OpenCUNY Academic Medium was formed to provide student organized, open-source social media for the Graduate Center community. OpenCUNY coordinators provide access to a free and open-source digital media platform, advocate for the use of open- source technology, and advocate for a digital community at The Graduate Center. The position of Coordinator for Organizing & Action was formed to expand the mission of OpenCUNY and have a coordinator work specifically with student groups.

The Coordinator for Organizing & Action promotes the use of OpenCUNY with student groups including DSC committees, affiliates, chartered organizations, Program Student Associations, and other collectives of students. The coordinator routinely reaches out to student groups to consult on organization websites and the use of OpenCUNY for stand-alone projects such as conferences, research, and digital publications, and is available to support those projects through to their implementation. In effect, the Coordinator for Organizing & Action helps students to organize, collaborate, and to amplify their messages using OpenCUNY. As examples, the outgoing Coordinator for Organizing & Action created a website community for the DSC chartered orgs (http://opencuny.org/charteredorgs/) and worked with the DSC Officer for Student Life and Services to find the best plugins to support the goals of the site, specifically plugins that would allow easy submission of housing posts (http://opencuny.org/services/). The Coordinator also consulted with students groups about using OpenCUNY for designing innovative conference programs that are mobile friendly, and other groups about using OpenCUNY for hosting a student-run journal.

Ideal candidates are outgoing, creative, skilled with WordPress, and interested in issues of open-access, open-source, and digital privacy. The successful applicant will join Laurie Hurson (Coordinator for Planning & Development) and Paul Hebert (Coordinator for Education & Support) in being  responsible for regularly communicating and sharing in decision-making processes; performing routine maintenance on the digital medium, including theme and plugin updates, bug checks and troubleshooting administering participants’ accounts and requests ensuring the reliability of the medium; facilitating and advocating  for the adoption of open standards, and ensuring that all activities of OpenCUNY are in compliance with the OpenCUNY Terms of Participation and DSC Constitution and Bylaws.

The ideal candidate would also have some or all of the following qualifications:

  • Knowledge of how the DSC, its affiliates, and chartered orgs work
  • Experience working with individuals and groups and talking about their website needs
  • Strong front- and back-end WordPress experience
  • Network administration experience with WordPress, preferably multisite
  • Experience with or willingness to learn server-level operations, including CPanel, mysql, Web Host Manager, FTP, and PHP
  • A collaborative work ethic and ability to work efficiently asynchronously
  • Dedication to building and preserving support structures and institutional memory
  • Vision for promoting and developing OpenCUNY in the future

Because OpenCUNY is a digital platform that serves the community of Graduate Center students, applicants must be matriculated Graduate Center students and have an OpenCUNY account at the time of application and throughout the duration the position is held.

The new coordinator will start on or around July 1, 2017, and receive a stipend of approximately $6,900 annually, paid in equal monthly installments of $581.88 from July through June. The OpenCUNY Coordinator stipends can be combined with other graduate stipends and are based on a set fraction of the minimum salary for the title of Graduate Assistant B.

Interviews are expected to be held June 28-30.

If you have any questions about this position or about OpenCUNY, please email the three OpenCUNY Coordinators at: info@opencuny.org

To apply, please send a cover letter, CV, and one-page descriptive list of digital projects and experience, by July 11th, to Cecilia Salvi, DSC Co-Chair for Student Affairs: ccsa@cunydsc.org.
